the more i read about dog training, the more confused i get! what’s the best known approach to training a dog?

i watch cesar on tv-that makes sense, i’ve read many books on”positive only” approaches-that makes sense too. i have tried both clicker training and cesar’s way. i feel very confused. and opinions are strong and dogmatic(no pun intended) in both “camps”. meanwhile, my dog still has problems. one “way” seems to work for some things, another for others.

A few questions about clicker training a dog?

We’re adopting a two year old Retriever/Greyhound from our local humane society. I am not certain as to the level of training she has and want to try out clicker training with her.

I can’t seem to find definitive answers to the following:

1. When you click and treat, do you also praise? Should I be saying, “Good girl!” while I am giving her the treat?

2. Do you correct at all with clicker training? I realize it is positive reinforcement, but does that mean that one does not correct? No saying “NO!” or anything like that?

Thanks to all.

A little clarity about clicker training for dogs?

I’m thinking about starting to clicker train my puppy. He is about 16 weeks old.

I read that with clicker training, you’re supposed to click just as he is performing a wanted behavior… once he gets the behavior down, then attach a verbal cue with it so he learns to sit, for instance, when you tell him to.

I understand how clicker training works for those natural behaviors such as sit, lie down, etc….but I’m a little confused about how this works for more complicated tricks that he doesn’t just do naturally.

Say I want him to roll over…. do I coax him into rolling over and then click and treat when he does? How do I communicate to him that this is what I want him to do if I don’t have a verbal cue at first?

thinking about clicker training my dog?

ok. ive seen alot of videos and have heard alot about it. seems like its very effective and common. but i have a few questions i couldn’t find. how can a dog do different things from the same click sound? like, how can a click mean sit but it could be come, lay, etc too? if i use clicker training, does that mean i have to carry the clicker around all the time and use it everytime i want him to do something? if youre not a fan of clicker training then what is your recommendation for training? ok, off the clicker question. fetching? is it natural or should i teach him? he’s 8 week old male border collie. should i wait till he starts fetching things or should so i start throwing things and see if he fetch? oh yea, it commend for BC collie to be quiet? he hasnt barked and ive only heard him whine once and that was the first car ride and it was only a sec. and he didnt make a single noise during his bath.
